A Heartfelt Note From The Author

Three years ago, when my husband had a massive stroke, I would have given anything to have a manual explaining how to deal with such a jolting life event. Unfortunately, there’s no manual, and even if there were, everyone’s experience is different when it comes to stroke, aphasia, and apraxia. There are different types, different levels of severity, and the list goes on and on.

The first year was so tough. I gravitated toward books, tutorials, and anything I could find in the vast array of resources available on the World Wide Web. As a caregiver, you wear a lot of hats. From getting your loved one ready in the mornings and putting them to bed in the evenings to fitting them with splints to dealing with compressions socks (I swear those things are evil), and trying to find time to dedicate to speech therapy, it seemed like there were never enough hours in the day. I’m sure, if you’re reading this, you or someone you know can relate.

I’m a true believer that the trials you face today will be someone else’s survival manual tomorrow. I’ve felt a tug on my heart to take my knowledge of trial by fire and share it with you in hopes it’ll make your journey a little easier. And friend, I’m here to tell you that you will get through this, you will recover, and you’ll grow in ways you never imagined possible.

So, with a humble heart and over a year in development, I’m happy to announce that the first of many Aphasia Readers are now available. My husband and I developed these readers after realizing a HUGE need for simple adult-appropriate readers to help those with aphasia regain their speech by reading aloud. Not only does it provide an outlet for relevant speech practice, but it also teaches those with aphasia how to hold a dialogue with others which helps with social confidence, reducing the loneliness they so often feel.

All that being said, we are delighted with the results, and this is just the beginning of a wonderful initiative that will not only help adults feel confident in their practice but also help them feel good about giving back as a portion of their purchase goes into creating aphasia awareness and helping those in need afford necessary speech therapy. We hope you find these books to be a helpful tool on your speech recovery journey. We want you to know that you’re not alone, and with practice, you will reach your goals.
